This is my first Chairman's Column, having been accorded the honour and privilege of being your chairman upon my election at the Meeting of Council in Rotterdam, on 27th September 1996. Firstly I must thank my predecessor, Karl Kieninger, for all his hard work during his term of office, it is never an easy job, carrying few bouquets, but with the possibility of plenty of brickbats! At that Meeting there were two other changes in persons holding senior office; Brian Whiting after 12 years of invaluable service as Honorary Treasurer, has hung up his'abacus' and turned over the Society's fiscal responsibilities to Helen Atkinson, our previous Vice Chairman of Council. To Brian the Society owes a deep debt of gratitude for a job well done over a long period and to Helen, we can but wish her well and thank her for volunteering to take over such an onerous position. With the unanimous vote he obtained, we also welcome Martin Kilt to the position of Vice Chairman of Council.
