The most important measures of efficient operations for RD organizations are how well they respond to customer needs, their on-time performance, and their performance in team environments, according to a recent study on RD practices by Teltech, a Minneapolis, Minn., technical-resource service provider. The most important concern behind management decisions affecting RD was meeting cus-tomer needs (72 percent). Other determinants, such as product technology (39 percent) and revenue (30 percent), were much less important. More than 90 percent of the respondents take a team approach in meeting these needs. One third organized themselves into cross-functional teams, a quarter into technology teams, and more than a third into both.
