Topological colloids Nature, 2013;493:200–205 The inclusion of micron-scale particles in liquid crystals is a rich area of research, with spherical particles being the paradigm. While particles of more complex shape are routinely investigated such as cylinders or ellipsoids, these are topologically equivalent – i.e., continuously deformable – to spheres. Now Senyuk and colleagues report a systematic experimental and theoretical study of particles with more complex topologies 1.
