I have visited numerous metalforming shops that do not have a serious electronic-sensor program for their tooling. Having looked into this very carefully, I have come to the conclusion that it boils down to a basic misunderstanding. Many shop-floor people in our industry simply have had no exposure to shops where electronic sensors are being implemented and are producing phenomenal results. I am convinced that many managers in our industry are equally not aware of how well and reliably electronic sensors can detect and prevent serious die damage Here are some solid reasons for using electronic sensors. Many can work in hostile environments, including within oils and coolants. They really work. When properly tested and installed they provide eye-popping proof of their worth with from the get-go. They are extremely repeatable and nonnegotiable-the target has to be in position. They have very long lives-many will cycle scores of million of times. They are inexpensive and easily procured. Electronic sensors are easy to install deep within tooling and fixtures and can be blended within metallic areas to protect them.
