India's state-run Nalco is looking to import around 130,000 tonnes of coal immediately to feed its Angul smelter operations amid a grave shortage. The critical coal shortage is likely to persist at least until the end of monsoon in September. Minerals and Metals Trading Corp. is likely to import the coal on Nalco's behalf. The shortage has cost Nalco's refinery in Damanjodi more than 10.000 tonnes of alumina production in July. Less coal was directed to the refinery after the government made deliveries to the country's coal-based power stations a priority in July, following a truckers' strike in June that left the power stations short of coal.
