Dana's presses had been running just fine according to most accounts, churning out automotive structural parts by the millions at its plant in Hopkinsville, KY. There, 16 presses from 600 to 3000 tons pound mild-steel sheet into suspension components-brackets, control arms, idler arms, cross members, etc. For years, the plant relied on a tried and true chlorinated paraffin lubricant sprayed onto stampings as they moved among die stations. Then, in 2005, a ground-swell of support for a new lube solution began to build in the company, according to Richard Bit-tie, the plant's continuous improvement facilitator.
