Molten bath mass can be automatically estimated many times a day in near real time, this paper proposes. Bath mass changes are most frequently due to changes in the thickness of the sidewall ledge caused by bath temperature changes. Molten bath mass estimates are essential for cell management in the potline, in order to (1) establish the voltage set points in conjunction with other operating parameters, (2) schedule aluminium fluoride additions and metal taps, and (3) correct in situ alumina concentration predictions for PID feed control.
