The traditional method of calibrating a computational river modelis to adjust the model parameters in a systematic manner until areasonable agreement between observations and computed values isobtained. This process is subjective and can be time-consuming, hencethe devel- opment of an automatic calibration proce- dure has been ofparticular interest in recent years. Automatic calibration proce-dures require a means of comparison between observations and themodel simu- lations called the 'objective function'.
