A twohyphen;dimensional double layer of amino acids is postulated as the constitution of proteins in solution. From the known size of a single amino acid residue, the shape and size of a protein molecule of molecular weight class 3500 may be estimated. The denatured molecules are postulated to have a filamentous or fibrous form, characterized by the polypeptide chain. The evidence for such a postulate is reviewed.
