Night lighting of the Galerius Arch in Thessaloniki was considered necessary after the completion of its conservation. As no extensive construction has been planned in its surrounding the use of poles is recommended for the lighting of the monument. In the event of major construction works, the suggested solution could very well be differentiated from the present one. The answer to the lighting problem should take several other factors into account, such as the glaring of drivers, local residents as well as passers-by moving into several directions. In order to reduce the dazzling and to retain full control of the lighting beams of the floodlights, a system of adjustable barn doors has been invented. They are installed in front of the glass cover of the floodlights and reduce their luminous flux by 30-35 of the initial.
