At the invitation of the CAS, a group of eight international experts convened in Nanjing on October 7~(th) and 8~(th) to evaluate the CAS Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology (NIGPAS). This is the first move of its kind ever made by CAS at the academy level. Earlier this year several CAS institutes had made similar assessments by themselves. The international panel is made up of eight world-renowned experts from the UK, the US, Germany and Australia, namely, Prof. Arthur J. Boucot from Department of Zoology, Oregon State University, Corvallis; Dr. Douglas Erwin from National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Prof. Richard Fortey from Department of Palaeontology, the Natural History Museum, UK; Prof. Richard J. Aldridge from University of Leicester, UK; Dr. Zhe-Xi Luo from Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Section of Vertebrate Paleontology; Prof. Franz T. Fuersich from Institut f uer Palaeontologie der Universitaet Wuerzburg, Germany; Prof. Richard Lane from Division of Earth Sciences, National Science Foundation, US; and Prof. Roger Summons from MIT EAPS, US.
