The aim of this paper is to present a method for taking intoaccount, in numerical terms, the physics of damage events duringimpact of composite structures considering both the constraints ofthe 3D explicit finite element analysis (especially the stabilitycondition which links time and spatial discretisation) and the lackof local observations during impact. An explicit finite element codeis used to model the dynamic characteristic of the impact loading. Wepresent two approaches for the modeling of damage phenomena: 91)averaging models 1 and contact technique, (2) simple criteria tofor determining damage initiation and extension. This approach ishere applied to the impact loading of 10 plies symmetric glass-epoxy0/90 laminated plates. In this case matrix cracking controlsdelamination and hence considered of primary importance.
