A streamflow forecasting program was instituted by Saskatchewan#x2019;s Hydrology Branch in the mid-1960#x2019;s to benefit water supply planning for the Squaw Rapids and South Saskatchewan River Projects. Since the spring of 1969, flood forecasting especially in the southeastern portion of the province has become the major component of forecasting activities. Flow forecasting procedures are described, with some background discussion of cooperative data sources and statistical analyses. Accuracy of forecasts is related to timing vis-a-vis the snowmelt or rainfall event. More detailed discussion is accorded the international and interprovincial Souris River Basin which has been subjected to a series of damaging floods. Saskatchewan forecasts provide warning to residents of the flood-prone reach downstream of Boundary Reservoir and permit operation of the reservoir to minimize the extent of flooding. North Dakota and Manitoba have ready access to all Saskatchewan-generated data through the International Souris River Board of Control.
