As expected, the board of Altria voted at the end of January to spin off subsidiary Philip Morris International to shareholders.The parent company will distribute one share of PMI for every share of Altria stock outstanding at 5:00pm New York City Time on March 28. In 2007, Altria pushed up net earnings from $9.8bn a year previous to $12bn, on sales up 10.1 to $73.8bn. PMI was again the driver, increasing turnover 9.6 to $22.8bn. In the United States, PM USA upped turnover 1.2 to $ 15bn aided by Marlboro which increased its share of the US cigarette market 0.5 points to 41 .
