To assess the value of a water course, such as the South Saskatchewan River, the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce conducted a survey of city residents and businesses. This survey recorded perception of the value of the River to them, in terms of economic, aesthetic, and recreational contributions made by the River. The results of the survey showed that many (78 percent of total) residents did not find the presence of the River as a strong enough factor in deciding Saskatoon as the city to live, or the neighbourhood within the city. However, an overwhelming majority (57#x2013;77 percent of total) of residents perceived the value of the River through its contribution to quality and variety of recreation, as well as to the quality of life enjoyed by them. The survey of businesses revealed very similar perceptions of the value of the River. Only a smaller (32#x2013;42 percent of the total) number of business perceived the value of the River in terms of attracting and/or retaining employees, or a strong enough force to locate in Saskatoon. However, over two-thirds of these businesses (69 percent of the total) perceived the value of the River in terms of its contributions to the quality of life of their employees.Although residents and businesses did not perceive an overwhelmingly high value of the River on all counts, it may reflect that either they do not place a high value on our unique water resources, or that they are unaware of the value these resources could have. Which one of these closely reflects the reality, needs further scrutiny.
