AbstractA theory of the extension of a roughly oriented fibrillar structure is worked out. Two mechanisms are involved: an extension of the fibrils, and a bending of the fibrils with accompanying deformation of noncrystalline material lying between them. The combined equation for both mechanisms does not fit experimental results for nylon and ordinary rayon, but does fit results for high modulus (polynosic) rayons.
