AbstractAn optimal control problem describing the changes in a patient population is presented. Different remuneration patterns for medical services are considered, and their influences on the physicians' curing efforts are investigated. It is shown that an ideal health care system should not reward the number of patients but the effects of the physicians' curing efforts.
