A treatment of optical parametric amplification (OPA) starting from quantum noise is presented. In order to describe the experimental situation the quantum theoretical approach is related to the propagation phenomenon taking into account the multimode character of the parametric radiation. An expression for the initial intensity occurring in the classical formula is derived.
