This article reviews recent literature on chronic pain syndrome. Specific reference is made to neuropathic pain which includes reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Placebo effect and field management of chronic pain patients is also addressed. New techniques for the management of old pain problems include intrapleural catheter injection for chronic pancreatitis and postherpetic neuralgia, and laser therapy for chronic pain states.
