Newcor Bay City Division, Bay City MI has introduced its Hy-Pak single-sided projection- welding process for sheet aluminum applications with critical surface-finish requirements. The process is the result of a two-year collaboration between Newcor Bay City and Alcoa. It produces a Class-A surface finish, with maximum structural stability, during in-process fastening and hemming of aluminum panels, including automotive closure panels and appliance show panels such as wrappers. Protective coatings on the welded surfaces are not disturbed, and there is no distortion or read-through on hemmed surfaces.Additionally, the elimination of the need for two-part induction-cure adhesives can yield a 50-percent material/handling/equipment cost savings as well as a reduction in processing time and required capital equipment. The process also can weld directly through adhesives, with no surface cleaning necessary.
