I hardly ever bother to read closely the monthly newsletter of my sailing club; it seems to contain little of interest to me these days. This is perhaps surprising since I not only served for some 11 years in several capacities in the general management of the club but also wrote a number of feature articles for the newsletters as part of the voluntary jobs I undertook. What I wrote was not always popular with the management and/or some of the members but did, I feel, reflect some fundamental truths about the club and the manner in which it operated. Inevitably, the older members tended to read the articles rather more assiduously than did the younger members. One particular article raised such a storm as to alter forever the way the club was managed. Whether that was good for the club or not is still a matter of opinion but it certainly changed things a little!
