Quenching reactions of He(2thinsp;3S) and He2(2thinsp;3Sgr;) metastables in the presence of N2and O2have been studied in the afterglow period of electron beam excited discharge plasmas at atmospheric pressures. For He(2thinsp;3S) both bimolecular and termolecular quenching rate coefficients were determined. For He2(2thinsp;3Sgr;) only bimolecular quenching reactions were observed, and rates for this processes are presented for the first time. In the termolecular quenching of He(2thinsp;3S) in the presence of N2and O2the product states of this reaction were identified as the He2(2thinsp;3Sgr;) molecular metastable.
