Although considerable number of articles on spinel have beenpublished, its thermochemical formation and stability under lowoxygen partial pressure are still not very well established 1. Inthe present work it is discussed the mechanisms of spinel reductionin the presence of carbon at elevated temperature under stronglyreducing conditions. Spinel substrates were screen printed withcarbon and heated at temperatures between 1250-1800 deg.C and PO2≤10~6. Experimental results obtained showed that spinel compositionchanged from almost stoichiometric for samples treated at 1250 deg.Cto more rich in alumina for samples treated at 1800 deg.C.
