The absorption spectrum of H2at liquidhyphen;nitrogen temperature has been further investigated with a 6.65hyphen;m vacuum spectrograph in the 800ndash;600hyphen;Aring; region. Eleven distinct groups, each consisting of 8ndash;30 absorption lines, have been observed at wavelengths converging to the levelsugr;thinsp;equals;thinsp;0ndash;5of the H2plus;ground state. Evidently these individual groups are Rydberg series. Consideration oflhyphen;uncoupling effects permits these series to be assigned asRlpar;0rpar;,Rlpar;1rpar;, andQlpar;1rpar;series innppgr;thinsp;larr;thinsp;Xtransitions and asRlpar;0rpar;series innpsgr;thinsp;larr;thinsp;Xtransitions. A new value of the ionization energy of H2, 124 418.4thinsp;plusmn;thinsp;0.6 cmminus;1, has been obtained from Rydberg series converging to theugr;thinsp;equals;thinsp;0level of the H2plus;ground state.
