We have developed materials from the system ZrO2-In2O3, with whichan ionic conductor, a mixed- conducting composite, and an electronicconductor can be tailored only by varying the ratio of ZrO2 andin2O3. Phase equilibria, phase transformation, ionic and electronicconductivities, defect chemistry, chemical compatibility, thick filmprocessing, and electrochemical properties are investigated. It isdemonstrated that a cell with a cathode/electrolyte structure usingZrO2-In2O3 exhibits satisfactory electrochemical performance, andthat a functionally gradient electrode/electrolyte structtire can beconstrncted to improve electrochemical properties.
