Mullite/ZiD2 laminate composites were studied as a model forfiber/matrix system for a better understanding of interfacialrelations. The laminate composites were fabricated by tape castingand hor-pressing. It was demonstrated that thermal mismateh stresseswere closely related to the formation of cracks and the crackdeflection behavior in the mullite/ZiO2 laminate composites. Twokinds of cracks were observed in zirconia layere, one is channelcracks in layers subJected to tensile stress, another is the edgecracks in layers subjected to compressive stress. Among three formsof ZiO2, tetragonal ZiO2 was effectivc to deflect the cracks at theinterface due to the stress induced tetra-mono phase transformation.
