ABSTRACTCarotenoid thin‐layer chromatography on silica layers using petroleum ether containingtert‐butanol ortert‐pentanol gave chromatograms with improved separation of oxygenated carotenoids compared with acetone‐petroleum ether systems. The effects on the retention of the individual compounds due to the presence of oxygenated substitutents were different for thetert‐alcohol and acetone systems. Thetert‐alcohol systems thus provided separations not available with the ace
