Defect chemistry and transport properties of solid electrolytesare discussed, including the influence of redox-active ions as wellas ionic and electronic charge carriers. The defect chemicalrelations both in complete equilibrium at elevated temperatures andin partially frozen-in state at lower temperatres are described.Transport properties are described with respect to partialconductivities, defect diffusion coefficients, and the chemicaldiffusion and surface exchange coefficients of oxygen. In-situ andex-situ optical absorption and EPR are applied. A case study forsingle crystalline selectively impurity-doped ZrO2(Y2O3) as a modelmaterial is presented.
