A UHVhyphen;compatible rotary manipulator with arcsecond resolution has been constructed for use in xhyphen;ray standinghyphen;wave experiments. The manipulator is computer controlled and features two separate stepping motor drives, a lsquo;lsquo;coarsersquo;rsquo; drive which allows sample rotations in increments of 7 arcsec with full revolution range, and a lsquo;lsquo;finersquo;rsquo; drive with a range of 1deg; and angular increments of 0.9 arcsec. The performance of the manipulator was tested under UHV conditions by recording rocking curves from a Ge(111) twohyphen;crystal monochromator in a nondispersive configuration, using Cuthinsp;Kagr; radiation from a sealed xhyphen;ray tube. Repeated measurements taken over periods of several hours reveal excellent repeatability and precision.
