Historically, experienced tool-and-die makers spent four years or more training apprentices how to perform their craft properly. Unfortunately, technical reasons behind why things are done sometimes can be overlooked, or simply not understood. Occasionally, an explanation for "why" might relate to past personal experiences or perhaps a table in a handbook. Sometimes, you simply do as you are told. Handbooks are great. In many instances, the information in handbooks is used very consistently within a trade since some books have become the accepted authorities for how things are done; which brings me to my point. There is nothing wrong with using handbooks or doing what you are told, but sometimes it is necessary to question accepted rules.
