Egypt is a large country, covering just over 1 million km2 across north west Africa and the Sinai Peninsula. Many of its major cities have been continuously inhabited from the time of the Pharaohs, some 5000 years ago. The great monuments of this time still stand today and include the Great Pyramids of Giza, shown below. Today the country is split into 27 governorates and has around 88.5 million inhabitants. Its geography is dominated by the fertile river Nile, with most agriculture, economic activity and major population centres located in the Nile Valley and Delta regions.
