With the introduction of 3D computer planning systems into radiotherapy planning it is now feasible to closely conform the 95 or more of the prescribed dose to the target volume (PTV), whilst sparing the surrounding healthy tissue and critical organs as much as possible. However, in many cases, because of the concave shape of the PTV, the tolerance of normal tissues remaining within the PTV can still constrain the treatment dose.
