On 1 January the auto industry supplier is founded a joint venture company with ACL (Automotive Components Limited) in Australia, until now the only piston manufacturer in that country, which supplies pistons to General Motors, Ford, Toyota and Mitsubishi. Mahle has announced that the Stuttgart concern will hold 51 percent of Mahle-ACL Piston Products Pty Ltd. Next year it is planned to begin the construction of a new factory near Melbourne, scheduled to begin production in 2003. the company anticipates an annual turnover of 65 million Australian dollars (almost EUR 38 million).
