A possible application of the nanotubes could be as part of new composite materials which may exhibit outstanding properties. This work describes ceramic matrix nanocomposite powders, that contain in-situ formed carbon nanotubes. Using Al_2O_3 or MgAl_2O_4 as matrix, Fe, Ni or Co as catalytic nanoparticles, and H_2-CH_4 gas mixture as reduction/carburation medium, we discuss the influence of various elaboration parameters such as the transition metal content, the specific surface area of the starting oxide solid solution and the thermal reduction/carburization conditions.
