abstract_textpBiochemical tests of exocrine pancreas contribute to the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis and of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. In acute pancreatitis acinar cell damage determines early and intense increases of plasma alpha-amylase and lipase activities. False negatives and false positives can be observed; some false positives can results from renal failure impairing the inactivation/elimination of these enzymes. In exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, the synthesis of proteins/enzymes by acinar cells is decreased : these activities can be measured in the intestinal content or in the faeces but the most useful test is the measurement of plasma/serum trypsinogen (TLI-Trypsin-Like Immunoreactivity). In exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, TLI concentration is systematically lowered below 5 mu g/l./p/abstract_text
