The 3d5/2binding energies of cesium and iodine in gaseous CsI have been measured by xhyphen;ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The values obtained are 732.3plusmn;0.1 eV for Cs and 623.6plusmn;0.2 eV for I. A simple electrostatic model is used to compute ionic and atomic 3d5/2binding energies from the CsI measurements. We have also obtained these energies by relativistic Diracndash;Fock calculations. Comparison is made with analogous nonrelativistic results and with experiment.
