Values of Hardness, H_V, H_K, Young's Modulus, E, and fracture toughness, K_(IC) of a lead-titanate-zirconate (PZT) were measured using the indentation technique in unpoled and poled samples. K_(IC) is affected by the poling, showing significant anisotropy in poled samples. In order to directly observe the behavior of the cracks produced by the indentations the profiles below the indented surfaces were studied in the unpoled and, in three different orientations, in the poled samples. The plastically deformed area below the indentation was observed. This permanent deformation is anisotropic and could possibly explain the high anisotropy observed in K_(IC) values.
