KS Aluminium Technology Corporation - part of the Kolbenschmidt Pierburg group - is a leading manufacturer of aluminium crankcases. The casting methods used in the company for mass-production are wide-ranging. During 2001 approximately 500,000 cylinder crankcases were manufactured, as well as about 300,000 bedplates, which were pressure diecast (cylinder crankcase subunits for two-part assembly). The company employs around 750 people (as at December 2001), and is located at Neckarsulm. Included among its clients are well-known car manufacturers such as BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Jaguar, Porsche, Volkswagen and Volvo. It also cooperates with other manufacturers in development projects. The company has specialized in aluminium cylinder crankcases and especially aluminium cylinder working surfaces (with the brand names Alusil and Lokasil). Cylinder crankcases have in various forms since the 1 970s primarily been manufactured for Otto engines, but since the 1990s also increasingly for direct fuel injection diesel cars.
