A critical step in the processing of particle reinforced aluminiummatrix composites is the insertion of the ceramic particles into themolten metal. This greatly influences the strength of the compositessince it is controlled by the matrix-particle interfacial bondstrength. It is known that Mg has a great influence on theconfinement of the reinforcement within the matrix, possibly due tothe formation of a reactive layer of MgAl_2O_3 at the particle-matrixinterface.
