At Corus Aluminium Rolled Products, a new 5xxx series alloy has been developed for automotive applications. The alloy has an excellent combination of formability, strength, corrosion resistance and weldability. The alloy contains about 4 percent Mg but is nevertheless, up to at least 100 deg C, not susceptible to intergranular corrosion. This is reached by the balanced additions of Zn and Cu combined with a special production process. The Aluminium-magnesium or 5xxx alloys in sheet form have been considered for some time to be the most appropriate choice for vehicle structures as they offer attractive combinations of formability, strength, weldability and corrosion resistance.
