The low temperature transformation (LTT) of a 3Y-TZP ceramic was investigated. LTT results were analysed in terms of Avrami-Mehl-Jonhson law which suggests nucleation and growth mechanisms. Observations by means of an optical interferometer reveal that, after an incubation period, transformation effectively occurs at the surface by nucleation of monoclinic sites from one grain and growth to the neighbouring grains.
