Bi-substituted gadolinium iron garnet films were deposited on GGG(111) and NGG(111) substrates by irradiating KrF excimer laser on to targets with the composition BixGd3-xFe5O12 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 3) at a substrate temperature of 580 similar to 620 degrees C. Analyses on structure, composition and angle of Faraday rotation, theta(F), were carried out. From these measurements, it is confirmed that a thermally non-equilibrium phase has grown when the amount of substituted bismuth, x, exceed 2. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
