Noted analysts estimate that the three-month price for aluminium at LME will only increase slightly towards the end of the second quarter. This price sluggishness is attributed to declining demand, hesitant consumers and higher LME stocks. However, analysts forecast some improvement of the US economy in the second quarter of 2002. In the view of Stephen Briggs (SG Commodities Group), prices will recover only very slowly over the next six months. This should be helped by the fact that worldwide aluminium supply is unlikely to increase while demand remains low.
