Portraits shot outdoors-formal or candid, film or digital-often can be improved with the addition of electronic flash, even if it just adds sparkle to the subject's eyes. Since this fill light need not be bright, and most location portraits are taken at larger apertures to blur the background, you don't need to work with a large pro flash unit. The flash can simply be mounted on top of the camera without worrying about red-eye problems. There is, of course, nothing wrong with using a more professional flash unit, as long as it doesn't interfere with the convenience and pleasure of the shoot.
