After more than a year-long stalemate, Pakistan and the US have made a breakthrough in their negotiations for a bilateral investment treaty. The breakthrough came, according to reports, when Pakistan relunctantly accepted all the US conditions. While Pakistan had reservations on several intractable issues the US insisted on conditions for protecting its investors and businessmen. The two sides had differences over five clauses related to scope and coverage, transparency, claims on behalf of an enterprise, investment agreement and arbitration rules.
