The polarized optical spectrum of Er3plus;in calcium tungstate at 4.2 and 77deg;K is reported. Radial integrals and spinhyphen;orbit coupling parameter derived from fitting the position of the centers of gravity of theJmanifolds in intermediate coupling areF2equals;423.89thinsp;cmminus;1, F4equals;67.995thinsp;cmminus;1, F6equals;6.667thinsp;cmminus;1, zgr;equals;2377thinsp;cmminus;1. A firsthyphen;order crystal field calculation based on the intermediate coupling states of the free ion is shown to account very satisfactorily for the optical spectrum, paramagnetic resonance, and magnetic hyperfine structure when usinglang; rminus;3rang;and the nuclear moment measured by atomic beam triple magnetic resonance. The agreement between the experimental and calculated crystalline quantum numbers is encouraging since they were not forced to fit in the calculation. Also, the fact that thelang; rminus;3rang;values obtained for a truly free erbium atom can be used for the case of the ion in a crystalline host indicates that the 4fwavefunctions are little affected by the surroundings. The values of the crystal field parameters obtained from fitting the optical spectrum are:C20equals; 231plusmn;7thinsp;cmminus;1,thinsp;thinsp;thinsp;C40equals; minus;90plusmn;2thinsp;cmminus;1,thinsp;thinsp;thinsp;C60equals; minus;0.6plusmn;0.5thinsp;cmminus;1,C44equals;plusmn;lpar;852plusmn;18rpar;thinsp;cmminus;1,thinsp;thinsp;thinsp;C64equals;plusmn;lpar;396plusmn;5rpar;thinsp;cmminus;1,thinsp;thinsp;thinsp;B6minus;4equals;plusmn;lpar;75plusmn;12rpar;thinsp;cmminus;1.The above parameters predict the Stark splittings of the 53 states up to 25 000 cmminus;1with an rms deviation of 4.4 cmminus;1. The calculatedgfactors aregpar;clpar;Z1rpar;equals;1.21, gperp;clpar;Z1rpar;equals;8.45, gpar;clpar;Z2rpar;equals;3.65, gperp;clpar;Z2rpar;equals;7.03; the corresponding measured values are 1.247, 8.38, 3.42, and 6.98, respectively.
