The mineral petalite transforms on heating to a tetragonal phasevia an intermediate hexagonal phase. Aspects of this transformationhave been studied in the context of lithium-based glass ceramics1,2,3,4 and petalite bearing ceramics 5,6,7,8,9, but theconditions controlling the transformation or the stability regions ofthe different phases were not established. Considerable disagreementexists in the literature about the terminology used for theintermediate and final phases of this transformation and for thisreason the phases are referred to in this study according to theirstructure.
