A design study is presented for a new, compact particle spectrometer. The device obtains energy andm/qanalysis using parallel electric and magnetic fields in the same volume. The instrument differs from the current generation of spectrometers in that it is smaller and provides beam focusing in the energy direction. Focusing is due to 90deg; ion deflection which differs from the usual 180deg; deflection. A key feature of the design is that good energy resolution is obtained with broad incident beams with nonhyphen;negligible divergence. A baseline design is presented to illustrate these features.
