The Raman spectrum of methane in solid matrices is reported. The ngr;1and ngr;3modes were observed in argon, krypton, xenon, and nitrogen matrices, and the effect of temperature and concentration changes investigated. The ngr;2transition was recorded in Ar, Kr, and Xe solids. For CD4the ngr;1, ngr;2, 2ngr;2, and ngr;3bands were measured in xenon matrices. The rotational band structure observed in the ngr;3and ngr;2modes is related to a theoretical model for matrix isolated methane, existing for ngr;3and applied by us to ngr;2also, and to the free molecular transitions. Our results are compared to previously published Raman spectra and differences and discrepancies are pointed out.
