Four single fibre composite systems, each composed of one of twoaluminium alloy matrices reinforced with an uncoated or coated SiCbased fibre have been fabricated and observed after each step of thefabrication process. To explain the differences in mechanicalbehaviour between the four types of composites, an analyticalinternal stress model has been developed. This model takes intoaccount the edge effects and the plasticity of the matrix. Bycoupling the results of the calculations with observations, theoccurrence of a specific damage process is explained.
